Temporary Opening of Iraq's Longest Bridge
Temporary Opening of Iraq’s Longest Bridge

A temporary opening has been announced for the Hamrin concrete bridge in Diyala province, following completion of 90 percent of construction works.

According to the Ministry of Construction, Housing, Municipalities and Public Works, the decision was taken to facilitate movement after rising water levels in the nearby lake caused damage to an embankment and disrupted access routes.

The project, overseen by the Roads and Bridges Directorate, includes a temporary diversion to enable vehicles to access and exit the bridge.

The Hamrin bridge is the longest in Iraq, with a total length of 7.75 km, comprising:

  • 3 km for the main bridge structure
  • 4.75 km for approach roads

The bridge connects central and southern provinces with northern regions via Diyala, and serves as a key route for passenger and trade traffic, including cross-border movement with Iran via the Mundhiriyah crossing.

The Ministry stated that the temporary opening is intended to ease transport flows until full completion of the project.
