China’s EBS signs Amendment to East Baghdad Oil Field Contract

Iraq’s Ministry of Oil has signed an addendum to the contract for the development of the East Baghdad (South) oil field with EBS Petroleum.

EBS Petroleum is a body registered in Iraq to conduct petroleum operations on behalf of China’s ZhenHua Oil,

The Minister confirmed that the agreement will enable the field to increase output by up to 100,000 barrels per day (bpd), expanding from its current production of approximately 45,000-50,000 bpd.

The contract includes the drilling of six new horizontal wells using advanced directional drilling techniques.

Additionally, the agreement covers the construction of four oil storage tanks, two with a capacity of 10,000 cubic metres and two at 3,000 cubic metres. The project also involves six oil infrastructure projects and is expected to generate employment for engineers and technicians, as well as implement community development services for nearby residents.

Deputy Minister for Extraction Affairs, Bassem Mohammed Khudair, noted that the amended contract would enhance output and provide long-term benefits to the region.

Mohammed Yassin Hassan, Director General of Midland Oil Company (MdOC), stated the deal aligns with the ministry’s strategy to maximise the utilisation of Iraq’s natural resources. He added that EBS will also establish a mobile lab to monitor pollution and a wastewater system to manage drilling waste.

Also in attendance was North Oil Company (NOC) Director General, Amer Khalil Ahmed.
