The Government of Iraq has issued an Award Letter to Texas-based Excelerate Energy to develop an integrated floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal.

The project is intended to strengthen Iraq’s energy security, support domestic power generation, and diversify supply away from unreliable sources.

The company said the decision followed approval from Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein conveyed official congratulations to Excelerate President and CEO Steven Kobos (pictured) during a meeting in New York on 25 September, held on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly. U.S. Department of State senior official Thomas Lersten also attended, underlining Washington’s support for U.S. LNG exports.

CEO Steven Kobos described the award as a milestone in Iraq’s infrastructure development, thanking Iraqi leadership for their trust. The project remains subject to final commercial agreements, with Excelerate actively working with Iraqi authorities to complete contracts and begin implementation.
