Phase One of Nahr Bin Umar Accelerated Gas Project Opens

The first phase of the accelerated associated gas investment project at the Nahr Bin Umar Oil Field has been inaugurated, with the aim of boosting associated gas utilisation and supporting Iraq’s energy supply.

The project involves the laying of a 5-kilometre pipeline with a 20-inch diameter to connect the gas network. Its initial investment capacity is between 70 and 80 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd). According to Izzat Sabir Ismail, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Oil for Gas Affairs, the project is expected to deliver:

  • 55-65 MMscfd of dry gas for power station supply
  • 500-600 tonnes per day of liquefied gas for the domestic market
  • Approximately 1,800 barrels per day of condensates

Ismail noted that work began in the first week of April 2026 and was completed within the same month. He attributed the achievement to coordinated efforts among national oil companies, in particular South Gas Company SGC) and the State Company for Oil Projects (SCOP), with support from Basra Oil Company (BOC)Oil Pipelines Company, and Basra Gas Company (BGC).

The inauguration was also attended by Ali Ward, Director-General of Oil Projects Company, and Ali Salman, Director-General of South Gas Company.
