A mass public vehicle crossing has taken place inside the submerged tunnel at Al Faw Grand Port marking what the General Company for Ports of Iraq (GCPI) has described as a historic milestone in the development of one of Iraq’s most complex engineering projects.
According to the Iraqi News Agency, the crossing took place on Saturday, with dozens of vehicles passing through the tunnel in a celebratory event open to citizens, employees, and engineering and technical staff. The Director-General of the General Company for Iraqi Ports, Dr. Farhan Al-Fartusi, led the procession.
Al-Fartusi told the Iraqi News Agency that the project had faced significant challenges and pressures during its years of implementation, including attempts to cast doubt on its viability, but said that engineering and technical teams had persisted until reaching this advanced stage.
