Erbil Airport Launches Direct Flights to Athens
On Sunday, Erbil International Airport (EIA) marked the departure of its first direct flight to Athens, operated by Aegean Airlines.
The launch event was attended by Nikolaos Stergioulas, Greek Consul General in the Kurdistan Region, and Ahmed Hoshyar, Director of Erbil International Airport.
Consul General Stergioulas and Mr. Hoshyar highlighted the strategic significance of Aegean Airlines’ entry into the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, emphasizing its potential to strengthen commercial, tourism, and trade ties between the Kurdistan Region, the Middle East, and Europe. They noted that this development could have positive economic, political, and social impacts on the region.
Currently, two direct flights per week operate between Erbil and Athens, with plans to increase frequency to meet growing demand from travellers in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and Greece.

وحضر حفل الإطلاق نيكولاوس ستيرجيولاس، القنصل العام اليوناني في إقليم كردستان، وأحمد هوشيار، مدير مطار أربيل الدولي.
وأبرز القنصل العام ستيرجيولاس والسيد هوشيار الأهمية الاستراتيجية لدخول شركة الخطوط الجوية الإيجيانية إلى إقليم كردستان والعراق، مؤكدين على إمكاناتها في تعزيز العلاقات التجارية والسياحية والتجارية بين إقليم كردستان والشرق الأوسط وأوروبا. وأشارا إلى أن هذا التطور يمكن أن يكون له آثار اقتصادية وسياسية واجتماعية إيجابية على المنطقة.
حاليا، يتم تسيير رحلتين مباشرتين أسبوعيا بين أربيل وأثينا، مع خطط لزيادة التردد لتلبية الطلب المتزايد من المسافرين في إقليم كردستان والعراق واليونان.
