Blue Economy Investment Cmte Meets in Baghdad

The project committee for blue economy investments under the National Investment Commission (NIC) has convened in Baghdad, chaired by NIC Chairman Prof. Dr. Haider Mohammed Makiya and attended by representatives of relevant ministries and agencies.

Blue Economy Investment

[According to the London School of Economics, the term ‘blue economy’ broadly relates to a sustainable ocean economy; the economic activities associated with the ocean, seas and coastal regions.]

The meeting focused on advancing projects listed under the climate investment plan, with blue economy initiatives identified as priority opportunities for implementation through private-sector partnerships and international fund financing. The chairman emphasised the role of such projects in improving services, enhancing water and food security, and supporting energy sustainability in Iraq.

Discussions covered a range of priority investment projects in the blue economy sphere, including:

  • Practical solutions to address water scarcity
  • The use of renewable energy to support and sustain blue economy projects
  • Mechanisms for supplying the NIC with sectoral plans and projects suitable for investment formats
  • Carbon reduction potential and associated environmental and economic returns
  • Support for national water security and enhancement of water reserves

The NIC said the projects align with government aims to establish sustainable resource management and achieve long-term environmental development.
